Wine Profiler FAQs

Q. What if I don't like milk?

A. Remember we are only using milk's consistency and weight as an analogy to determine where you fall on the scale. You can also think of other beverages like beer: light vs. regular stout or ale. Don't approach the question thinking of the type of milk you prefer. Think in terms of consistency.

Q. I'm not sure on the sweetness scale - cranberry juice is tart. I don't like tart wines and unsweetened tea doesn't have any flavor.

A. When referring to cranberry juice, think only of the level of dryness/sweetness. Ignore the tart factor. For dry wines: think of unsweetened peach or blackcurrant tea. You can smell the fruit, but it is not sweet until you add sugar.

* Hint: The more ripe fruit a wine has, the less tart it will appear. Tannins will appear softer also. Ripe fruit does to wine what adding cream does to a strong coffee or tea.

Q. I still don't understand what tannins are?

A. Tannins are present in other products like strong tea and walnuts. It's equivalent to putting a blotter in your mouth to remove moisture, which in turn creates a drying sensation between your gums and the roof of your mouth.

Q. Why should I use the Wine Profiler? I usually get recommendations from friends.

A. If recommendations consistently work for you, that's great. However, we all have different palates which are quite subjective. What is smooth or dry to one person may not be so for the other person. The Profiler was created to help you find your individual style of wine by measuring what level of each component you prefer.

Q. I don't like wines with a strong tobacco aroma or flavor. Will the profiler help me to avoid these wines?

A. The Wine Profiler does not address flavor characteristics. Our Shelftalkers will have flavor descriptions listed for each wine, so you can choose those that suit your taste. Ex: tropical fruit, oak, blackcurrant etc.

Q. What if I'm still confused about my profile after taking the test?

A. You can always stop by The Vineyard and use our tasting system. The staff will help guide you through each component to get your profile.
